Incubators, Accelerators & Coworking

The UK has numerous Accelerators, Incubators and Coworking Spaces which offer startups many routes into the technology ecosystem.  They each offer a different level of engagement but all provide access to like minded individuals and teams.  Incubators and Accelerators provide  short collaborative programs  that include mentorship and training and end in a public pitch event or demo day.  Typically they invest between £20,000 and £100,000 in your company for and equity stake between 7% and 10%.  One of the key benefits beyond the program itself, is visibility within the investment community which helps greatly with follow-on rounds of funding.  London has more than 60 incubators, some of the best are listed below, Tech.London and Coworking London provide more extensive lists.

Techstars is the global ecosystem that helps entrepreneurs build great businesses.  They run programs with both sector and geographical focus.  In the UK, they operate both Techstars London and Techstars Barclays London.  Home to a thriving international community of tech, founders, innovators and investors, London is an epicentre of startup activity. Ranked as the #6 strongest startup ecosystem in the world, London is known as a powerful location for startups. Founders are flocking to London to start their business and to learn from the incredible mentor community there.

Wayra UK is part of Telefonica Open Future, a global innovation network with a recognition that a corporate acceleration is an emerging solution for scaling start-ups and solving the many large-scale problems facing society.  Wayra supports 50 companies a year in four sites across the UK.  They operate partnership programs including the GCHQ cyber accelerator, a retail focused program with ASOS and a health program with MSD, a global healthcare company.

Campus London is Google’s space for entrepreneurs, part of a global network of five similar locations. Google has a team on site who manage the facility, but they do not offer any programs themselves.  The coworking space is run by techHub and Seedcamp runs the accelerator program.

TechHub creates spaces around the world for tech entrepreneurs to meet, work, learn and collaborate, and runs a load of great events, advice sessions and more. We provide physical and virtual spaces that enable technology startups to work smarter, develop faster and increase their chance of success. TechHub offers flexible workspace, access to an energetic community, the resources of a global company, the energy and shared knowledge of a tech conference and the buzz of a social networking event rolled into one!  #GoGlobal is a global partnership with Google  giving TechHub access to the Google for Entrepreneurs programs.

The Imperial White City Incubator is a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, providing office and laboratory space for early-stage companies. The two-storey 18,000 foot Incubator facility contains 10 laboratories, 20 offices, meeting rooms and break-out areas. This state of the art premises is conveniently located in White City, Zone 2, making it an ideal location. The Incubator contains a true entrepreneurial community who share the experience of developing a deep science business. Imperial Innovations runs a programme of seminars and events at the Incubator, designed specifically for entrepreneurs and inventors.

Barclays Accelerator is a global fintech focused program run by Techstars in four locations, London, New York, Cape Town and Tel Aviv. Barclays has demonstrated a high level of commitment with significant direct involvement from key decision makers at Barclays. The intensive 13 week program includes an investment from Techstars and is located in a dedicated co-working space in White Chapel, close to London’s Mile End.  Barclays also run Eagle Labs which is a workspace community service in nine locations across the UK.

The SETsquared Partnership is the enterprise collaboration between the universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey aimed at providing a start-up ecosystem in the local region.  The have extensive support that ranges from incubators, flexible office space and training programmes for early stage businesses including but not limited to university spin out and research commercialisation.

CyLon is Europe’s first cyber security accelerator.  Since 2015, they have worked with 45 of the most innovative cyber security startups from across the world. Twice a year, they run a 13-week programme designed to help teams achieve product-market fit in a uniquely technical and demanding industry.  The curriculum includes everything you would expect to find from business fundamentals and mentoring, to CISO discussions and investor introductions. This concludes with a Demo Day, where participating startups present to a wide range of industry-leading experts.

BBC Worldwide LABS is a start-up accelerator committed to catapulting 12 companies a year to the next level of growth. During this time the start-ups are mentored by a dedicated team of industry experts and introduced to BBC Worldwide’s global network. It’s a two-way relationship, exposing BBC Worldwide to innovation and disruptive technologies, while supporting promising UK digital entrepreneurs to grow their potential.

Microsoft Accelerators offer a 4 -6 month tailor-made program for later-stage startups looking to go beyond the development of a product to scaling their business.  They provide the support and resources necessary to build a sustainable company, and to scale up every aspect of the business.

Level 39 is Europe’s largest technology accelerator for finance, retail, cyber-security and future city technology companies. Owned wholly by the Canary Wharf Group, Level39 launched in March 2013. Since then, Level39 has grown from a simple idea into a three-floor, 80,000 square foot accelerator space occupying the 39th, 24th and 42nd floors of One Canada Square.

Oxygen Accelerator is one of Europe’s most established tech accelerators. The Seedcamp Platform is a highly effective way to launch a startup company and secure a first round of funding.  They provide much more than capital with an on boarding and feedback program that makes the learning curve less steep and support networks more accessible.  They offer three funding packages and support in finding follow on financing.

Startupbootcamp is a global network of industry focused accelerators. They aim to take startups global by giving them direct access to an international network of the most relevant partners, investors, and mentors in their sector.  Startupbootcamp started in 2010 and now operates globally with 21 industry-focused programs in 16 locations including Amsterdam, Cape Town, Chengdu, Berlin, Dubai, Rome, Istanbul, London, Barcelona, Melbourne, Miami, Mumbai, Mexico City, New York, and Singapore.

The Ignite Accelerator is Europe’s #1 network of angel-led accelerators.
